Why gates fail more often than garage doors

A garage door lives indoors on a short run of low voltage cable. A driveway gate lives outside, two hundred feet from the house, with its wiring in the ground and its operator in the rain. Water gets into boxes, ants nest in transformers, and lightning finds long buried runs.

Then there is the ground itself. A swing gate depends on its post staying plumb. A post that has moved half an inch at the base is several inches at the latch, and now the gate drags, the operator strains, and eventually the operator wins the argument and bends something.

Slide gates depend on their track being clear and their rollers turning. Red clay, gravel and leaf litter fill a track and the gate starts fighting it. A lot of gate calls turn out to be mechanical rather than electrical, which is good news because it is cheaper.

What a repair visit actually looks like

The first thing is releasing the operator and moving the gate by hand. If it is heavy, catching or dragging, the fault is mechanical and no amount of electrical work will fix it. If it swings freely, the problem is in the operator, the board, the power or the controls.

One customer's gate had stopped working entirely. Ricky was out of town when they called and still scheduled a tech, and within a couple of hours of the tech arriving the gate was working again. On the same visit the tech replaced sensors on a garage door that had not been closing properly for a couple of years.

When Ricky got back into town he came out again to finish the loose ends and brought extra clickers, because the family had been sharing two remotes between them. Nobody asked for that. It is in the review because it is the part they remembered.

Swing, slide, and picking between them

A swing gate needs room to swing, which means a level and clear area inside the property line and a driveway that does not slope up towards the gate. It is usually the cheaper install and it looks right on most rural and residential entrances.

A slide gate needs a run of clear space alongside the drive for the gate to sit in when it is open, and it needs a level track or a solid cantilever setup. It suits a narrow entrance, a sloping drive, or a spot where a swinging leaf would hit something.

Either way the operator gets sized to the gate's weight and length, not to a price point. An underpowered operator on a heavy gate is the gate equivalent of an undersized spring, and it ends the same way.

Safety, access and the things people forget

A powered gate is a heavy moving object at car and child height, so it needs safety devices. Photo eyes across the opening, safety edges on the leading edge, and a loop in the drive so the gate cannot close on a vehicle sitting under it.

Access is the other half. Keypad for family, remotes for cars, and a way for a delivery driver or a visitor to get your attention. Think about the postman, the propane truck and the neighbor before the install rather than after.

And the fire service. Emergency access to a gated driveway is worth deciding deliberately, whether that is a knox box, a code, or a manual release somebody can operate from outside. A gate that keeps everyone out including an ambulance is not the goal.
